If it's not used properly it can mess up your site. Try 301 redirect instead.

A canonical page is the preferred version of a set of pages with highly similar content.
Canonical Url is the best solution for duplicate urls in your website. It helps you deal with unwanted urls or query strings by adding the meta tag of the main url. Then google will keep only the url you want in its index and your site will not be consider ... Add a rel="canonical" link to the <head> section of the non-canonical version of each HTML page. You can specify a canonical URL in two ways: 1) <link rel="canonical" href="http://www.example.com/product.php?item=swedish-fish"/> 2) Link: <http://www.example.com/downloads/white-paper.pdf>; rel="canonical"

Canonical issue is create when we work on 1 url by two types like with www or without www where link juice is divided in two url that's why ranking is focus on one page. for remove this problem we use canonical tag or 301 redirection.

A canonical tag (aka "rel canonical") is a way of telling search engines that a specific URL represents the master copy of a page. Using the canonical tag prevents problems caused by identical or "duplicate" content appearing on multiple URLs. Practically speaking, the canonical tag tells search engines which version of a URL you want to appear in search results.

URL Canonicalization is the process of picking the best url when there are several choices, and it usually refers to home pages.
