The main purpose of sitemap.xml is showing to the robot what is the structure of your site. It's also created for better crawling and indexing your website's pages, because sitemap.xml contains only that pages which needed to be crawled and indexed.
It's important that sitemap doesn't contain technical pages (filters, sorted pages, pagination and others), also you have to update your sitemap as often as your content is updated.
