It depends on the changes. If you keep the same content and structure it should not affect your ranking. If it is aesthetic customisation make sure your images are optimised. But use them sparingly, CSS gradients and fonts in the stylesheet is the best way to achieve this as it will keep a fast loading page. Which is good in Google's eyes.
