That's why search engine need some way to measure which content is good. It's very useful because there can be several website on one topic, one of the example is Weigh loss. Now, when types weigh loss in Google how goolge can know which site is good. In order to find the best quality possible Google and other search engine use the several parameters to measure the quality of the site. Almost 91% of the people only visit site that are on the first page of search engines. Now, order to get on the first page you need show search engine that your website is good and for that you need SEO. To show that your website has quality content. If you don't use SEO searcg engine won't trust your site and you will get no visitor. No, sitters means no money. High the ranking site has more visitors and hence earn more money and you need SEO to be on the High rank.
