If you are running a Wordpress blog, I would highly recommend getting WP Rocket. It is the best speed optimization plugin.
It is not f r e e however, and If you want a f r e e one, then get "W3 Total Cache", it should do the work for you
Aside from that, check Google Page Speed and go to a site like GT Metrix.
Scan your website and find errors in rendering and see what slows down your site. Work on each point until you make it AT LEAST less than 2 sec load time.
Anything above that is already beyond competition nowadays.
ALL ELSE being equal, sites that load faster will perform MUCH BETTER than ones which load slower.
