website ranking after domain change

hi all,

1st of all - not completely sure this is the right forum to place such question - if it's not, please move it to the correct one, thanks in advance.

I have a website offer to buy, but a bit suspicious on it. To make the whole story short - this website was launched ca 1 year ago, has gained traffic steadily until around March this year (checked GA for it, all seems legit, not many suspicious spikes in traffic etc). At the end of March, website changed name to a different one, with old domain redirecting any traffic to the new domain and website. Traffic is similar to what was on previous website name, with a trend to go higher.

This new website ranks quite high on some kws (i.e. spot 1 and 2 in google.in). Now, the question is - is it really possible to rank that high 1 month after name change? Can it, in any way, obtain the ranking of the previous domain name?

If you need any more details, please give me a shout.

Thanks for your thoughts.
