Search engine optimization can be divided in two parts ,off page and on page. One page SEO is method where we optimize a page or website so that it becomes more friendly for Search engine (Point should be noted that changes do not necessarily mean it will be more useful for user experience, For example a webpage primarily made of JavaScript will be good for users but it will be bad for seo).

Now about off page SEO, well no matter what ever a SEO company or expert says its a technique to trick the search engine. whether its link building link earning or social bookmarking, Its all same.

You can consider google and other search engines big machines where human learns faster than them and trick them so that you just cross the parameter of being bad and can become better than average
