If you don't use social sites in a social way ads like ppc will seem better, however the ratios of interests on ads is dismal, going in order if you do end up using social sites well you'll find that they rank like this:
1. Twitter
2. Google+
3. ~ A Variety of Other Social Media Sites ~
4. Facebook
5. Ads
6. Facebook Ads (attract a ton of bots, not worth a penny you put into it)
