Oddly enough even joining forums and asking and answering questions is good, so you're 1 step of the way there.
To be more specific social media is great if you focus all the prominent links in the profiles to your site only, remove inter-linked social profiles so traffic doesn't bounce from one to another. Then you might want your site linked back out in case you refer real people to it w/ a buisness card or something. What you post is irrelevant...so long as it's relevant to whatever you're doing and using the social sites to be social with people.
