Whatever techniques you decide to use to promote your website, it is better to be certain of what you are trying to achieve. It does not necessary mean all techniques work for any site. Most importantly make sure you don't get penalized by Google or any search engine, because it is very difficult to recover from this. Most people are forced to start with a new domain when penalized; I am sure nobody wants that.
If you find your site not going up in the ranking, it is a good idea to check "in Google webmaster tools" if your site is suffering from a Google manual penalty or algorithm penalty. If Google can penalize Ebay (last month, manual penalty), they can penalized any website.
