Not all forums are created equals. One forum I was involved in finally crashed after going through several months of slow activities and suffering several bugs of all sorts.
One forum provides friendship and relationships that are actually quite fun. This same forum has also provided me with guidance with decisions I had to take with the development of my web site, even if web site development is not the topic of the forum.
Other forums are more impersonal but useful to know how people think about certain topics of interest, even when they don't see things the way I do. But then being impersonal or not also depends on the degree of involvement one takes in each forum.
I see as an added benefit that some of the people I get to know through the forums do in fact visit my web site...
