Well allright, numerous people have responded as to what a landing page is.
But on many sites the intention is to offer products or services. Therefore the objective is to lead visitors to some action: often called conversion (buy a product, take up contact, ask for a price offer).
There are guidelines (best practices if you like) as to design of a landing page. You should try to look these up in Google. It's really helpful.
