The importance of fresh content still depends on the quality of it. Fresh content with crappy, spammy, keyword-stuffed things is still useless.

If you will notice, there are some duplicated contents across the web that gets high value because of the information they carry and how they help casual search engine users. So quality still speaks of the fate of a content whether it is fresh or not.
