SEO isn't dead but I don't believe you can just rely on backlinks and on page optimization anymore. You need to join on the conversation on many other sites and, dare I say it, almost ignore Google! The power is now in combining sites like Facebook, Twitter, Squidoo, Youtube and the rest and using them as a funnel to your own sites. See my book for full details.
