I don't quite understand the original question, but I would recommend as much diversification as possible in terms of your web traffic. Here's some online examples:
SEO
PPC
Social paid/unpaid
Affiliates schemes
Each is a mammoth subject in its own right.
You need at least to test each of these streams and find what works/doesn't work for your particular site.
