Building natural links should come from blog postings, participating in forums, submitting articles to article directories.
You can also build inbound links from social media sites but it's been debated whether or not those links carry as much weight as it would if coming from a website.
I started in the following order:
Submitting to Article Directories
Blog Posts
Forums
The good old fashioned way. Finding websites with content that was relevant to my site and asking to exchange links. Yes, there will be rejection but then there will be others who are willing to exchange.
