If you are looking to host big forum on shared host then you need to consider following points.

1)Resource usage in terms if cpu amd memory
2)Traffic/ bandwidth usage
3)Database size
4)Number of visitors

Big forum generally need high bandwidth and resources that sometimes become problem on shared hosting as there are already multiple sites are hosting and sharing server resources.

In this case host your site on cloud vm or dedicated server is an ideal solution for best performance.
