Lets just keep a blog a blog. It is a presumed rationale among webmasters that edu blogs (and links) speak relatively high quality than a wordpress/ blogspot blog.

The fact is that any blog (whether edu/ wordpress/ blogspot) cannot rank higher unless it delivers quality and is relevant to the end-user.

I have personally seen many non edu blogs doing quite well in terms of SERPs and traffic.
