Start with searching and learning. SEO is a wide platform to learn almost everything and for learning you must learn to research. First find yourself some mega & helpful blogs, basic videos and etc. just to create interest in the field.
After learning about basics you can put your first step in off-page activities or shall I say link building. Still don't put your step out of searching & learning because SEO is full of changing & upgrading. Link building will teach you how to market, research, build strategy, and some website related factors.
Now the main course come as On-Page Optimization which will teach you main website factors, how-to survive, how to make changes, how to compete and how to re-start.
SEO is not full of Off-page activities and On-Page Factors, as I said above it a very wide platform to learn. In case you want to handle client working by yourself then first you must learn client handling, fulfilling the desire, dedication to satisfy the clients first.
