The HTTP 404, 404 Not Found, 404, Page Not Found, or Server Not Found error message is a Hypertext Transfer Protocol standard response code, in computer network communications, to indicate that the browser was able to communicate with a given server, but the server could not find what was requested.

If a page returns a 404 error code, it means it doesn't exist, so Google and other search engines will not index it. ... However, it's not so much the actual 404 pages that hurt SEO, but the links that contain URLs pointing to the 404s. You see, these links create a bad experience.

In theory, 404s have an impact on rankings. But not the rankings of a whole site. If a page returns a 404 error code, it means it doesn't exist, so Google and other search engines will not index it. ... However, it's not so much the actual 404 pages that hurt SEO, but the links that contain URLs pointing to the 404s.
