What is Google Authorship and its benefit?

do you know about google authorship? How it is good and give benefit to our websites?

Google authorship is a new way to get quality content on the search results. Perhaps the name does not sound, but surely you’ve seen already some research you’ve done on Google. A few months ago Google has begun to implement Google Authorship, a function for which the articles you post connect with your Google+ profile and highly visible your avatar on the left of each of these posts on the results of Google searches.

The benefit of Google Authorship is to improved Search Engine Results Page (SERP) rankings.

I think google authorship provides credit for your content and helps it be on top of serps.
