You'll want to think about who is your target audience, and what the primary focus of your website will be. Need help on this one? Read my article titled Understanding Your Audience.

Each page on your site should have one to three related keyword phrases that are site-specific. For example, say you have a page all about coffee mugs. Good phrases to target on this page would be coffee mugs, ceramic coffee mugs, or unique coffee mugs. See what I mean? They're all related, and they're all pointing at the same general content on the page.

while choosing the keyword for your post, you should first check the competition on the keyword and also check which websites are competing for this keyword.

Medium competition keywords and low competition keywords are the best to increase websites ranking fast in search engines. Google Adwords is the best tool to search good keywords.

Talking about competition on the google adword tool then that is the advertisers competition for the keyword so a high competition can be a good thing. If you are talking about the competition to get to the top of the SERPs then it can be a very bad thing!
