I think there's an endless debate about which of these two is important. After all, SEO is important to the people on your site where you want to attract to land on. Similarly, if you have a good profile of social media, there is more chance of ranking high in search engines.

I would say SEO should take priority as it is more important than any SMO buzz. However Social Media Optimisation is something that all site owners should address as the big sites like Twitter and Facebook are here to stay.

Both are different platforms... SEO is for search engines and SMO is for social network.... so both traffics are good...try to do both at a same time...
