How Does Google Pick Descriptive Text?

How does Google select the descriptive text for listings (between the Title and URL)? I'm not referring to the Description or Category...I'm asking about a site's interior pages that don't have Description or Category.

Google picks up the descriptive texts from:
1.Directory description
2.From the Meta tags
3.Text near the first Keyword in the body

Google is selecting a descriptive text for listings. It is not the description of the category that is being related here, but the interior pages of the site that have a description and a category.

I want to have an idea as to how the big G would do the picking of descriptive text when searches are made by people on the online world these days.

Google displays either the meta description of the particular page or the anchor text present in the particular page, for instance About US:Contact Us. However a page without description will usually be ranked far in the search results.

It picks from meta tags.
