In search analytics data, an image is simply a link to the URL of the host page. ... Clicks on expanded images, or any image clicks that navigate the user out of Google Search, are counted as a click. Impression - Impressions are counted when the user sees either the thumbnail or expanded image.

That is what I thought but our numbers are so off that it didn't make sense. This site has a great web presence with high impressions and image impressions are much higher. Personally I use web search much more then image search and I imagine most other people do as well.

Google webmaster impression means how many times your link/Results appear in google searches.

An impression is counted each time your ad is shown on a search result page or other site on the Google Network. Each time your ad appears on Google or the Google Network, it's counted as one impression.
