What is difference between crawler and spiders?

Crawler is basically named by Google that it's crawler visits websites to index pages. Otherwise crawler of other search engines such as Bing, Ask, etc. are called spiders.

CRAWLER : Also known as Robot, Bot or Spider. These are programs used by search engines to explore the Internet and automatically download web content available on web sites.
SPIDER: Hence, "Google spiders" is another name for "Google indexing bots". Spider - a browser like program that downloads web pages.

Google has used the word Crawler to index pages, newly updated into it. However other search engines call Crawler as Spider.

Crawler- Crawling takes place when there is a successful fetching of unique URIs which can be traced from valid links from other web pages.

Spider- A spider is a program run by a search engine to build a summary of a website’s content (content index). Spiders create a text-based summary of content and an address (URL) for each webpage.
