Is directory submission still effective in SEO?

I have heard that Directory submissions are no longer important for search engines. Also the search engine sites consider these as thin and spam sites, Is it true? Should we stop directory submission SEO off page activity?

The problem is that, if you control the link, as you do when you submit your directory, Google is not impressed with that. Outside of a few very high-quality directories, I quit submitting to directories a couple of years ago.

Directory is still effective if you submit relevant content on relevant website. Do not submit bulk submission.

I do still submit to some directory sites, but I'm choosy as to where I submit and what I submit. They definitely improve page position.

They boost domain authority which means they still work but you have to find pages with less then 100 links and decent domain authority so you need to be choosy. I wonder if yahoo directory is worth investing in.
