Certainly they do, have you ever heard experts saying engagements and constant activities count and matters in SEO ranking?
Now what is constant engagement? Mentions, links, social signals, new contents (may be blogs), external contents (Blogs, posts and articles on your channels or other sites with links) now all of these are considered as Activities. In the eyes of Google a website (company) that's active gets more value. In this aspect No follow counts a lot by bringing in most needed activities and keep your website engaged.
Besides let's assume you posted an interesting article with links (nofollow) on some website. Some people search and share interesting contents on their blogs, if your content is interesting (In their eyes) the chances are they will share them, preferably with links. That could easily result in getting a dofollow link. Another alternative chance which is very hard to happen, and way too remote. If your article provides very rare information, and ranks well for similar search, then the chances are your article could even get "Citation" on top website including Wikipedia or .Edu websites. This happened twice for our company.
