Windows folder extension?

I recently changed a windows folder extension to "new folder.txt" just to see if I could do it, and it worked fine, it changed it to a text file, only problem is, I can't change it back and it had some info in there that I needed.
What is the windows folder extension?

Click the Options icon on the right of the ribbon. In the Folder Options dialog box, select the View tab. Deselect Hide extensions for known file types and click OK.
