Is web coding a necessity in graphic design?
Hi,
I've recently graduated with a degree in Advertising and wanting to go into the graphic design industry. I'm wondering now, whether my lack of web development skills are going to lessen my chances of pursuing a graphic design career? Or will I be okay with what I know/do currently? |
A graphic designer creates graphics. A web designer builds web sites. They aren't the same job. It's very cool if a web designer can create his own graphics, or a graphic designer can prototype web pages, but in my experience of working in organisations, the 'graphics department' and the 'web team' are usually different teams with different skill sets.

HTML is the most basic tool u need to know, but in this day and age just using HTML is very rudimentary and primitive.

The fuzzy grey area to consider is frontend web development for dynamic content. JavaScript is easily the most popular language and supported in all modern web browsers. Web designers shouldn’t feel required to learn any JavaScript – but it is an immensely powerful language which you can use to add flair into your designs.

Yes, coding is necessary, even if you're using an all-in-one tool like dreamweaver

A basic idea about HTML is very important for a graphic designer. It will an added advantage to your skills.

No if you want to be a graphic designer than for that you need design and creativity skills not web development skills.
