Multiple H1 tags, good or bad?

Hoping you guys can shed some light on whether multiple H1 tags on a web page is good or bad for SEO.

My theme seems to throw up multiple H1 tags but I can't seem to find a way to remove them.

Having done some research, it seems there is conflicting theories out there. Some say it's not an issue with HTML5, but others are saying it's still not a good idea to have.

Just wondering what you guys think or know?

It is not bad. However, try to maintain only one keyword rich H1 tag.
