It is a mathematical technique, used in an indexing and retrieval method. Actually it is big thing if explained in deep. It will return the results from the collection of text by identifying patterns in the relationship between terms (user queries) and concepts.

Ex: Document Categorization. (ie.) Documents are moved under relevant predefined category based on the text.
