What is back link?

Backlinks, also known as incoming links, inbound links, inlinks, and inward links, are incoming links to a website or web page. In basic link terminology, a backlink is any link received by a web node (web page, directory, website, or top level domain) from another web node.

I would like to add one more point to your post chikkiarora, backlinks are two types one is do follow and no follow. Do follow backlinks are only counted by Google but other search engines count both do follow and no follow backlinks.

In simple words, a backlink is any link received by a site from another site. As I know dofollow back links can be followed by search engine robots that are denoted as a natural link and should be valued by search engines. It is really helpful for getting better SERPS rank and also drives good traffic to our website. On the other side nofollow back links can be followed by search engines but doesn't deliver PR juice to the linked site. It may not help to increase pagerank, though it is useful for drive traffic to website.

Backlinks, also known as incoming links, inbound links, inlinks, and inward links, are incoming links to a website or web page. In basic link terminology, a backlink is any link received by a web from another web node.
Inbound links were originally important as a primary means of web navigation; today, their significance lies in search engine optimization (SEO). The number of backlinks is one indication of the popularity or importance of that website or page (for example, this is used by Google to determine the Page Rank of a webpage). Outside of SEO, the backlinks of a webpage may be of significant personal, cultural or semantic interest: they indicate who is paying attention to that page.

Backlinks occur when one webpage links to another. For example, this is a backlink for RolCats. Search engines view backlinks as a kind of vote for a website and, very generally speaking, the more ‘votes’ a web page has, the higher it will rank on the search engines’ results pages.

Backlinks simply mean other sites that are linking back to your site.

They may link to your site because

- they find your site to be of interest to their audience (whether positive or negative)
- your site has great, witty or unique information that they want to share to their readers
- you requested them to link to your site or include your site in their list of recommended resources or related links, if they have any
- you went to their forum and put a post there with a link to your site
- you can also buy backlinks from websites like SEOclerks.
