The best way is to create quality content that people want to link to and share. The better the content the more links you will get. Infographics can be a good way of doing this.

SEO is still the best form of traffic but I think that eventually social media traffic will overtake SEO. So plan long term and start building out your social media networks while you build and attract quality links.

I've never messed with the "pay for backlinks" stuff. It's been just over a year since I launched my forum and it does okay in its search results in google and get some new visitors here and there without doing anything black hat or shady.
