A "reverse sandbox" effect is also claimed to exist, whereby new pages with good content, but without inbound links, are temporarily increased in rank—much like the "New Releases" in a book store are displayed more prominently—to encourage organic building of the World Wide Web.

The Google Sandbox is an alleged filter placed on new websites. The result is that a site does not receive good rankings for its most important keywords and keyword phrases. Even with good content, abundant incoming links and strong Google PageRank, a site is still adversely affected by the Sandbox effect.

The Google Sandbox theory is that Google puts new websites into a “Sandbox” before they can rank well in a Google search and make their way to the top of a search result. Google wants to make sure that a website is legitimate and not just a fly-by-night website that was set up with bad intentions before it ranks it prominently on the SERP
