The words used to identify a website are known as the domain or URL, and like the IP address, they're unique to each website. Think of it like a mobile phone: you want to call your mother, so you simply click on your contact "Mom" and your phone dials your mother's phone number.

When referring to an Internet address or name a domain or domain name is the location of a website. For example, the domain name "google.com" points to the IP address "216.58.216.164", but it is generally easier to remember a name rather than a long string of numbers. A domain name can be a maximum of sixty-three characters with one character minimum, and is entered after the protocol in the URL, as you can see in the following example.

In general, a domain name represents an Internet Protocol (IP) resource, such as a personal computer used to access the Internet, a server computer hosting a web site, or the web site itself or any other service communicated via the Internet.
